Head of Insurance Compliance

Location: Caribbean
Salary: Approximately £130,000–£170,000 tax-free, plus benefits and relocation assistance

Happy to consider ex-pats for the role.

Barclay Simpson is supporting an established financial services organisation with the appointment of a Head of Insurance.

This is a high-profile senior leadership opportunity within a major international insurance market. The successful candidate will take responsibility for a sizeable specialist team and play an influential role in shaping the organisation’s approach to insurance oversight, risk management and market development.

The organisation operates within a sophisticated cross-border financial services environment encompassing captive insurance, commercial insurance and a growing reinsurance sector. The role therefore offers a rare combination of technical insurance responsibility, strategic leadership, international engagement and the opportunity to influence the continued development of an important global market.

The role

Reporting to a senior executive, the Head of Insurance will:

  • Set and deliver the strategic direction of the insurance function.
  • Lead and develop a substantial team of insurance and reinsurance specialists.
  • Oversee a risk-based programme of monitoring, assessment and review.
  • Provide senior-level direction on complex insurance and reinsurance matters.
  • Assess emerging risks, market developments and areas requiring intervention.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, frameworks and professional standards.
  • Build effective relationships with senior executives, industry bodies and international stakeholders.
  • Represent the organisation at industry meetings, conferences and international forums.
  • Deliver improvements to processes, systems and operating practices.
  • Develop technical capability throughout the team and establish effective succession plans.
  • Promote a culture of sound judgement, transparency and continuous improvement.

Candidate profile

This opportunity is likely to suit an established senior insurance professional who can combine technical credibility with strong leadership and stakeholder-management skills.

Candidates should ideally possess:

  • Significant experience within insurance, reinsurance, risk, compliance or regulation.
  • Previous experience gained within an insurance regulator or a role involving substantial regulatory responsibility.
  • Senior leadership experience, including responsibility for specialist technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of risk-based insurance supervision and cross-border insurance business.
  • Experience of captive insurance, commercial insurance or reinsurance.
  • An understanding of capital, solvency, governance, financial analysis and enterprise risk.
  • The ability to analyse complex issues and make clear, proportionate and defensible decisions.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience engaging with boards, senior executives, industry associations or international bodies.
  • A genuine commitment to coaching, knowledge-sharing and succession planning.

A relevant degree is required. A postgraduate degree or recognised professional insurance, accounting, legal, risk or actuarial qualification would be advantageous.

The opportunity

This is considerably broader than a conventional Head of Compliance or insurance management position. It offers the successful candidate the opportunity to:

  • Lead an established and highly technical insurance function.
  • Influence the development of an internationally recognised insurance market.
  • Gain exposure across captives, commercial insurance and reinsurance.
  • Work with senior stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Represent the organisation internationally.
  • Build and develop the next generation of insurance specialists.
  • Relocate to a highly regarded international financial centre.

International applications are encouraged. The organisation offers a tax-free salary of approximately £130,000–£150,000, health and pension benefits, together with relocation assistance for the successful candidate and eligible family members.
