Our mental health and wellbeing initiatives

We recognise that working in recruitment has very specific impacts on our mental health and seek to normalise mental health discussion

In 2020, our CEO Dean Spencer and the Barclay Simpson Board made a commitment to put our staff’s mental health and wellbeing at the top of our agenda. Recruitment can be a very stressful job; both when the market is challenging and jobs are in short supply, and when the market is buoyant and expectations to bill bigger numbers increase. Everyone is always “on” and the impact this can have on mental health can be huge. By creating a Mental Health & Wellbeing (MHW) Committee, we seek to pay more than lip service to mental health and wellbeing in our team.

Integrity, insight, collaboration and respect.

Mental health first aider training

We have in-house support for anyone going through a problematic period

10 Barclay Simpson representatives have completed mental health first aider training to provide on-the-floor support to anyone suffering, and to embed a culture of understanding and empathy within our teams. Mental health is not a subject our team shies away from, everyone is open to talk and discuss their challenges and work together to find a solution.

Flexible and remote working

We allow our team to work in ways that suit them

We offer our teams the opportunity to work remotely up to four days a week so they can strike a balance that works for them between the stresses of a work environment, commuting, city and the concentration and peace achieved in a home working set up.

BUPA Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

When you need external support, we provide access to specialist help

While we have internal support systems and a culture of empathy, sometimes external help is required. That’s why we provide the BUPA Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that allows every employee access to up to 25 hours of therapy every year.

Mental Health in Recruitment (MHIR)

We are committed to changing the recruitment industry for the better

We have partnered with Mental Health in Recruitment (MHIR) to drive change in the recruiting industry and create a more empathy-led and sustainable workplace. We engage with a regular programme of events delivered by MHIR to educate and support everyone at Barclay Simpson as they progress through their career.

Performance support programme

We don’t give up on our people

When someone is suffering from a mental health condition, it is likely to impact their work. We recognise this and work with our team to provide further training or support to get them back to where they want to be. No one should have to worry about their job performance when they’re struggling.
