Legal Counsel – Mortgages

The Barclay Simpson legal banking division has recently been engaged by a global banking organization to bring on a a Specialist Lawyer to join their Retail, Wealth & Business Banking legal team to support the mortgage division.

In this role you will act as a contact within Legal for product lifecycle from innovation, development and delivery to specific product advice primarily focusing on our mortgage division.

 

What will you be doing?

 

• Providing high quality legal support for for the Bank’s UK retail banking business – in particular on mortgage matters
• Effectively managing legal risk and reports in line with organizational and departmental requirements
• Providing concise and easily understandable legal advice on medium to complex subject matters
• Liaising with appropriate business areas to ensure that matters are appropriately supported within Legal and best practices shared with wider teams
• Building effective and lasting relationships with all stakeholders

 

What backgrounds am I looking for?

 

• Candidates looking to be considered for this position must hold either a current Solicitor Practicing Certificate for England and Wales or be fully admitted to the English Bar or hold a Scottish or foreign jurisdiction capable of conversion
• Experience and working knowledge of the UK regulatory framework for financial products and services is essential – this includes good knowledge of mortgage law and FCA conduct rules (especially MCOB), and developing Consumer Duty obligations
• Sound working knowledge of all aspects of regulated banking together with a thorough understanding of the retail, wealth and business banking business, its drivers, challenges and market practices with specific focus on consumer credit matters (especially CCA regulated lending fixed-sum personal loans and documentation requirements)
• Understanding of regulatory requirements for digital retail product delivery and execution
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability to complete outputs for different audiences, including senior management

 

Location

This role can be based either in London or Milton Keynes.
