Job Description

A new opportunity has been created with the investment arm of a FTSE 100 firm for Head of Operational Risk with a focus on Health & Safety.

The division’s core purpose is increasing the returns on the Group’s principal balance sheet. They focus on improving returns through direct investments such as housing, care homes, hospitals and city regeneration whilst ensuring they have enough capital to withstand tough market conditions
They invest in businesses including wholly owned start-ups and this role will ensure the companies operate a best practice approach to meeting their obligations around health and safety, environmental and operational risk oversight.


Role responsibilities:

  • The role-holder will also support team members who sit as Directors on the Board in executing their responsibilities in relation to Health & Safety and other Operational Risks.
  • The role is based in central London, but the role-holder will be expected to visit the Businesses regularly at their offices, construction sites and/or factories in the Berkshire area and Midlands.
  • This role positions the role-holder uniquely to act as an ambassador for the company and its subsidiary businesses, engaging with employees at all levels.
  • Establish and maintain the Divisional governance framework for the management of Operational Risks, supporting all the subsidiary Businesses and ensuring they can operate safely and efficiently within that framework.
  • Develop appropriate MI to enable the monitoring of Health & Safety, Environmental and other Operational Risks in all subsidiary Businesses. Present the MI to relevant Boards and Committees.
  • Undertake 2nd line oversight of Health & Safety, Environmental and other Operational Risks across all subsidiary Businesses.
  • Work with the division’s Joint Venture (JV) partners to ensure that Health & Safety and Environmental Risks in each JV business are managed appropriately.  This includes reviewing proposed new investments and setting out the risk management framework within which we would expect a subsidiary Business to operate.
  • Work with start-up and operating businesses to ensure that they manage Health & Safety, Environmental and other Operational Risks effectively.  Escalate and remediate issues as required.
  • Health & Safety managers in start-up and operating businesses will have a dotted reporting line to the Head of Operational Risk, who will be expected to support recruitment of appropriately skilled managers into the businesses.
  • Support start-up and operating businesses in acquiring the appropriate ISO and other accreditations, facilitating re-use and consistency across businesses as appropriate.
  • Act as an ambassador for the company, communicating and supporting the company culture in start-up and operating businesses.
  • Support team members who sit as Directors on the Board in understanding and executing their responsibilities in relation to Health & Safety and other Operational Risks, including interpretation of MI presented to those Boards.
  • Take the lead in all matters with regard to the management of employees, ensuring that management discretion is used in a consistent manner and that the area follows the Group’s policies and procedures including the Partnership Agreement to maximize business performance.

Skills & Qualifications Required:

  • Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH) preferred.

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience of managing Health & Safety and Environmental risks for a FTSE 100 Company.
  • Experience of managing Health & Safety in construction and/or manufacturing businesses.
  • Experience of working with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and other relevant regulators/regulations.
  • Experience of producing MI at an appropriate level to enable the active management of risk and effective communication to all levels in the company, including the Group Board.
  • Experience of the ISO accreditation process.
