The division

Barclay Simpson has one of the City’s most established risk recruitment teams with a proven track record across all functions of risk management.

Risk is one of the fastest growing areas of recruitment globally since the credit crisis in 2007/8. Our focus is deeply seated on the agenda of all Chief Executives across financial services with all financial services firms having a Chief Risk Officer on their board of directors. In addition to growth, risk has developed as a discipline in its own right more than almost any other area of financial services in the last decade.

The combination of high levels of growth, development and importance on the agenda of regulators has meant that recruiting for risk remains a growing market.

Our global risk recruitment team has 14 members split between New York, Asia, UAE and London.  We operate on both a contract and permanent basis and have made over 500 placements into 150 clients since the team was created.

Our team places candidates from Analyst through to Managing Director and Global Heads of Department. We are well networked with the majority of the financial institutions in London. Each consultant has a deep technical knowledge of their respective markets with on average 10 years’ experience recruiting in their field.

The opportunity

As a team we have a regular flow of roles from a broad range of long term clients. We are in addition looking to strategically develop certain areas of our market within our network of C-suite level clients. The addition of a junior member to the team will ensure both greater speed and accuracy in our delivery capability to clients.

Our commitment to the candidate

Management: The successful candidate will report to the Risk Team manager in London who has over ten years’ experience recruiting in Risk.

Mentoring: In addition the individual will have a dedicated mentor in Antony Berou, who has recruited for Credit Risk professionals for over 12 years. Antony will be responsible for supporting the successful candidate in their knowledge and understanding of Credit Risk. Furthermore, Antony will be there to support this individual on a day to day perspective through the recruitment lifecycle from identification of successful candidates to closing candidates in the Credit Risk market. Our short term goal is to ensure the individual is credible in all areas of Credit Risk Management in the shortest period of time and able to support Antony in all stages of the recruitment lifecycle.

Formal training: Successful candidates will be formally supported through a training programme led by our internal trainer, Sophie Spencer.

Candidate Development

Longer term the individual will have the opportunity to manage their own desk, responsible for Credit Risk Analytics across both Retail and Wholesale banks. Following completion of the formal training scheme the consultant will then be encouraged and supported to take responsibility of this section of the risk market.

Please note that the candidate will not have to build out their market from scratch, but be supported to expand on our existing business.

If however the successful candidate should wish to continue as a senior researcher for Credit Risk they will also have the opportunity to do this with specific training to develop executive search techniques from proposal writing to mapping, research, referencing and managing a search process.

Candidates will have both candidate and client exposure almost immediately. We have a flat structure and there is no limit to the speed at which this individual may progress.

The candidate

We have high expectations in terms of the service we provide to our clients and candidates and the reputation we hold in the market.  We expect all new recruits to meet this high level of service.

Candidates are likely to be outgoing, enjoy meeting new individuals and are naturally curious about others.

We are looking for an individual to have some form of recruitment or sales experience however brief. The candidate should at least have a theoretical understanding of the recruitment lifecycle and be able to discuss best practice in interview.

Candidates with experience in Risk will be challenged on their knowledge both of the subject matter and the market. Candidates who have experience in areas other than risk will be asked to demonstrate what they have learnt and discuss their relevant markets.

The candidate must be highly motivated and excited by the prospects of cold calling individuals and developing their own knowledge base. The candidate will be expected to be on the phone and meeting candidates throughout the day.

The role will require data entry into our company database as well as market mapping. As a firm we are proud of the accuracy of our database and therefore our ability to efficiently support our clients.

Candidates who have not heard of Risk Management before, should be prepared in interview to give an everyday example of the following types of risk to demonstrate their ability to understand the terminology.


Risk Management: Risk- anything which may affect the achievement of an organisations activities

  • Market risk is the potential for changes in the market value of trading and investment positions
  • Liquidity risk is the risk that a company or bank may be unable to meet short term financial demands. This occurs due to the inability to convert a security or asset to cash  
  • Operational risk is the risk of loss caused by:  failed internal processes, people and systems, or from external events
  • Credit Risk is the potential for financial loss as a result of lending money or from trading securities and derivatives.


The prospects

  • Longer term the individual will have the opportunity to join the long established Barclay Simpson Profit Share Scheme. As a profit share consultant which has hit a total of £180k billings in a 12 month period they will have their basic salary increased to £60,000 and be in line for a total compensation in the region of £85,000-£95,000* depending on group profitability. For candidates who excel and bill over £240,000, they will have the opportunity to be a part of Profit Share plus which would mean there is no limit to their earning potential.

The interview process – Presentation to the team

Candidates should present 3 slides;

1)      The Recruitment Lifecycle

2)      Credit Risk Management in Banking

3)      If you could choose 3 people you would like to meet in Credit Risk in Banking, who would you chose and why?

The interview will be no more than 45 minutes long. Presenting the 3 slides should not take more than 15 minutes and the rest of the interview will be more conversational in style with Q&A from the team. The presentation must not be too technical and should consider the audience as individuals who have not heard of Risk Management before.
