Demand for lawyers slowly growing in Private Equity
The UK private equity legal market is fairly niche and is concentrated in the West End of London. There are some larger UK private equity houses which have in-house legal teams of up to five lawyers, but many firms will have just one or two lawyers, and rely heavily on external counsel for both transaction and fund formation work.
Although the private equity market has been hit hard by the global recession, the impending regulatory and governance initiatives that will affect the private equity sector are likely to create vacancies within in-house legal teams. In addition, some private equity firms have realised the importance of having a strong corporate governance function to attract investors, and also the cost savings available by bringing work in-house instead of relying on external lawyers. Recently these factors have led some private equity firms to recruit a first in-house lawyer for their business, or to strengthen their existing legal team.
Legal recruitment across the private equity sector is set to grow steadily for the rest of 2009.
