 The UK economy contracted by an unprecedented 6% in the six quarters ended September 2009. This had an inevitable impact on corporate governance recruitment. However, we estimate that the decline in employment in corporate governance during this period was significantly less than the 2% experienced by the wider economy.
Whilst redundancies were at the highest and vacancies at their lowest during the first quarter of 2009, by the middle of 2009 it became clear that the banking system and economy had at least stabilised. It was at this point that the recruitment market began to improve. By the end of 2009 some sense of normality had returned to the corporate governance recruitment market.
Notwithstanding the myriad of challenges facing not only the UK but also the wider world economy, we are cautiously optimistic that this improvement can be sustained into 2010.
