Demand for lawyers in banking steady
There are more legal jobs in the banking sector than in any other area of financial services. The scale of the banking industry and the variety of legal jobs within it are vast.
Although the investment banking sector is the area worst hit by the financial crisis, the role of the investment in-house banking lawyer is adapting. We are seeing an increase in specialist legal roles as well as opportunities for lawyers to broaden their practice area. Lawyers with experience in securitisation and structured finance, capital markets, derivatives, leveraged and syndicated lending, and project and asset finance are all in demand.
Retail and corporate banking are still providing jobs for lawyers, with many departments continuing to expand. Previously seen as less attractive than investment banking, legal jobs in banking are increasingly viewed as more interesting and more secure with retail and corporate banking products becoming more complex and many of the legal skills being sought transferable from investment banking. Junior and mid-level lawyers straight from private practice are in demand. Experience of specific retail banking products, structured products, general lending or leveraged finance, FSA regulation, corporate and commercial are all sought after.
