Steady demand for investment management lawyers
While the investment management sector has been affected by the financial crisis in line with other areas of the financial services industry, it is still relatively buoyant when compared to investment banking. The investment management sector has grown rapidly in recent years and this has generated opportunities for lawyers in a variety of fund management businesses including traditional asset managers, funds of funds, custodian banks, hedge funds, real estate funds and private equity firms.
Currently legal jobs in the fund management sector exist for funds lawyers with investment management agreements (IMA), fund set up/launches and distribution experience. Positions exist in both regulated and un-regulated sectors. There is a steady flow of senior counsel opportunities as funds businesses seek to bring more of their legal work in-house. While the most senior opportunities tend to go to lawyers with previous in-house funds experience, less senior roles are being offered to experienced funds lawyers from either a private practice or in-house background. In the current market, opportunities for lawyers without fund management experience are extremely limited.
