Resilient demand for internal auditors in insurance
While the insurance industry has not been immune to the effects of the recession and the generation of insurance internal audit jobs is subdued against recent historic measures, internal audit recruitment has not been affected as badly as some areas of corporate governance. There is a steady stream of internal audit vacancies coming from all sectors of the industry including life and pensions.
Not surprisingly most insurance companies prefer to recruit internal auditors with previous insurance sector experience. This provides a challenge as many internal auditors currently prefer the security of their existing employment and to date there have been only limited redundancies from within the sector. Those managers who are recruiting are often disappointed by how few candidates with relevant experience and qualifications are available. For internal auditors with insurance sector experience who are currently looking the recruitment market can be surprisingly rewarding.
Demand is broadly based with vacancies arising from the major listed insurance groups and more specialist areas such as the Lloyd’s of London and London Insurance Market where companies are continuing to develop their governance structures. Solvency II is becoming a common requirement and, with an October 2012 deadline, it has the potential to significantly increase demand.
