The growth in international corporate governance is a result of the need to control international trade and properly manage an ever-larger number of multi-national businesses to avoid accounting scandals like Enron and WorldCom, which brought the issue of corporate governance to the fore. Such scandals inspired the introduction of Sarbanes-Oxley, a global benchmark for corporate governance, which now underpins demand for internal audit professionals worldwide.
With internal audit and risk playing an ever more central role in all large companies, internal audit is now a highly attractive career route in its own right within large corporations, with an increasing number of financial specialists getting right to the top of international organisations.
There are a wide variety of international internal audit roles on offer, with the level of travel abroad typically ranging from 40 – 100%. Candidates who accept international roles tend to experience a great deal of autonomy compared to their colleagues and relish the opportunity to communicate with staff at all levels within the business, including senior management, often making use of their language skills.
As companies recruit more and more international candidates, accountancy qualifications are not always essential anymore. Clients will rather consider the experience gained, the clients worked with and the candidate’s commercial acumen. Technical ability and presentation / communication skills are also vital.
