The National Audit Office

The role of the National Audit Office (NAO) is to audit the financial statements all government departments and agencies, and many other public bodies It also reports to Parliament on the value for money with which these bodies have spent public money. As well as providing accountability to Parliament, it aims to bring about real improvements in the delivery of public services.

Northern Ireland Audit Office

The Comptroller and Audit General for Northern Ireland (C&AG) is head of the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) and is responsible for authorising the issue of money from the Northern Ireland Consolidated Fund, for ensuring that there are adequate arrangements for the collection of revenue and the external audit of central government bodies in Northern Ireland and a wide range of other public sector bodies. He undertakes financial audit and value for money audit and the results of his work are reported to the Northern Ireland Assembly, or to Parliament during the suspension of devolution.

 

Public Audit Forum

The public audit agencies - the National Audit Office, the Northern Ireland Audit Office, the Audit Commission for Local Authorities and the National Health Service in England and Wales and Audit Scotland and the Accounts Commission for Scotland - have established the Public Audit Forum to provide a focus for developmental thinking in relation to public audit. The main role of the Forum is consultative and advisory. It is not able to direct the national audit agencies and other bodies involved in public audit.

 

Society of Local Authority Chief Executives & Senior Managers
