Demand for internal auditors now recovering
After what had been an unprecedented decline in the UK and global economy, demand for internal auditors began to recover in the second half of 2009. This has continued into 2010. We anticipate that the patchy demand in the latter half of 2009, which was primarily led by the internal audit departments of smaller UK companies, will broaden out to include the larger multinational groups, banks and financial services companies that dominate the internal audit recruitment market.
Many of those companies with vacancies will find that the choice of internal auditors they might otherwise have believed to be available is actually limited. One of the most surprising, and if you are an internal auditor pleasing, aspects of the recession was the low level of redundancies. However, the economic backdrop to securing a new position in the first half of 2010 is one where unemployment is still rising and companies remain cautious.
Whilst the economic recovery is fragile and uncertain, we remain cautiously optimistic that as 2010 develops, the internal audit recruitment market will continue to improve.
